"It's always safer in politics to avoid risk, to just kind of go along with the status quo. But I didn't get into government to do the safe and easy things."
Sarah Palin

Don’t fall for it!

Congressional support for the public option appears to be faltering, but don’t be fooled. It is very likely they will still ramrod it through (they have the votes after all). This talk about a “co-op” compromise involving private insurers is merely a rebranded public option and a diversionary tactic. It’s basically the same thing as the public option.

Focus on the actual contents of the bills in the house.

ALG President Bill Wilson says:

“Politics is a turbulent sea. And Obama is moving his ship out of the storm of opposition to his plans to take over the health care system. He doesn’t want his ship to go down. The idea behind talking about non-profit ‘co-ops’ is to deflate opposition to the actual bills that exist in the House, all of which contain the so-called public ‘option.’ He knows the Democrats in the House won’t go for the ‘co-ops,’ but then his goal is to take the heat off of them by distracting the American people from the actual threat.”

Which means we can’t take our eye off the target. There’s still 3 bills in the House that contain the public “option,” and there is little doubt that when the House returns from its August recess, they will be voting on a government-run health care proposal.

Phyllis Schlafly says:

“The important thing that the American people must understand is that when Democrats say there must be a competitor for private sector insurance, the competitor they speak of is the government. Any attempt to rename or rebrand the public option as a ‘co-op’ or something other than government-run is purely cosmetic and a sneaky tactic to lessen grassroots opposition.”
